Women’s Self Defense Seminar


1)     Predator vs. Prey

  1. Predators like a lion prey on the weak
  2. Criminals have all of the advantages and you have none
  3. In order to beat a criminal you need to think like one
  4. Many criminals are hardened and trained
  5. Train your mind to think self defense


2)     Mental Awareness (heightened awareness at night)

  1. Keep your head up
  2. Understand potentially dangerous situations or places
  3. Take note of the people around you
  4. Keep your distance always facing potential dangers
  5. Have your purse in a clutch position (football)
  6. Trust your gut instincts (6th sense)


3)      Potentially dangerous places

  1. Parking garages
  2. Parking lots
  3. Empty house (real estate agents)
  4. Parks and forest preserves
  5. Bars and nightclubs
  6. House party
  7. Taxi cabs


4)     Avoiding potentially dangerous situations

  1. Have a male friend walk you to your car
  2. Try and avoid walking streets or parks at night
  3. Try to stay in public places where people are present
  4. Don’t get into anyone’s car unless you know and trust them it is better to call a friend or a cab
  5. Don’t go into a guy’s house until you completely trust them
  6. Always try to make sure you have a safe way of getting home
  7. Try and inform someone of where you are or will be and when you might be coming home
  8. Try to schedule contractors/service providers when you can have a friend, husband, or partner at home
  9. Don’t let strangers into the house even if they say they are a service providers unless it was a scheduled appointment
  10. Try to use a peephole or chain lock when answering the door
  11. Avoid being in a closed room, store, house, by yourself (such as a guy inviting you in to their house)
  12. Assess risk factors at work and try to reduce those factors if possible


5)     Precautionary steps to take when leaving the house late at night

  1. Have your keys ready
  2. Check out the scene before leaving
  3. Always keep your head up and look around (check behind you)
  4. Check underneath car from a distance
  5. Before opening up car door check the back seat
  6. Always have your pepper spray in hand and ready!!!


6)     Domestic Violence

  1. Very serious problem the statistics are high
  2. Be very cautious of getting close to someone
  3. It is never your fault
  4. Always tell someone there are always people who can help (family, friends, police)
  5. Cut relations after any signs of physical abuse no matter what
  6. Never stay in an abusive relationship
