|OLYMPIC champion Milica Mandic of Serbia was among the early winners in the fifth Bahrain Open Taekwondo Championship, being held at Shaikh Isa Sports City in Riffa.
Mandic claimed the gold medal in the women’s under-73kg category after defeating Andjela Popovic of Montenegro 12-0 in the final.
Mandic was the Olympic gold-medallist in London last year, where she won the over-67kg class. She has also been a bronze-medallist in the world championships in 2011 in South Korea, and a silver-medallist in the European Championships, also held last year in the UK.
The competition is being held under the patronage of Supreme Council for Youth and Sports chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
Supreme Council for Youth and Sports first deputy chairman Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa was present at the opening ceremony. Bahrain Olympic Committee chief executive Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa was also on hand, as were BOC secretary general Shaikh Ahmed bin Hamad Al Khalifa and Bahrain Self-Defence Federation president Shaikh Mohammed bin Salman Al Khalifa.
Nearly 20 countries from all over the world are being represented in this year’s event, including Afghanistan, Egypt, the UAE, Malaysia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Slovenia, Palestine, Bahrain, Serbia and Montenegro.
